The Indirect Ethics of AIG’s ‘Backdoor Bailout’

چکیده
We experimentally assess the ethics of the U.S. government’s indirect bailout of the bank counterparties of American International Group (AIG) during the 2008 financial crisis. When the indirect bailout is jointly compared with a counterfactual where the government directly bails out the banks, subjects judge the indirect bailout to be far more unethical. On the other hand, when the two scenarios are judged separately, subjects consider a direct bailout of banks to be more unethical. This suggests that ethical judgments of indirect versus direct action exhibit a type of preference reversal that is dependent upon whether the evaluation mode is joint or separate. The ethical and policy implications of this preference reversal are discussed.

Backdoors to Satisfaction
A backdoor set is a set of variables of a propositional formula such that fixing the truth values of the variables in the backdoor set moves the formula into some polynomial-time decidable class. If we know a small backdoor set we can reduce the question of whether the given formula is satisfiable to the same question for one or several easy formulas that belong to the tractable class under con...
متن کاملFacing Political Power in Islamic Ethics
The present article looks at the control of political power through the lens of Islamic ethics, which distinguishes between the two approaches of direct and indirect criticism by examining some ethical texts. In these texts, the direct critique of power, on the one hand, is necessary to correct the state of society; but on the other hand, given its enormous dangers, it is advisable to avoid it....
متن کاملBailouts and the Preservation of Competition
We estimate the value of competition in United States Forest Service (USFS) timber auctions, in the context of the Reagan administration’s bailout of firms that faced substantial losses on existing contracts. We use a model with endogenous entry by asymmetric firms, allowing survivors to respond to the exit of bailed-out firms by entering more auctions and for these marginal entrants to have lo...
متن کاملBackdoors to Acyclic SAT
Backdoor sets, a notion introduced byWilliams et al. in 2003, are certain sets of key variables of a CNF formula F that make it easy to solve the formula; by assigning truth values to the variables in a backdoor set, the formula gets reduced to one or several polynomial-time solvable formulas. More specifically, a weak backdoor set of F is a set X of variables such that there exits a truth assi...
متن کاملBackdoor Trees
The surprisingly good performance of modern satisfiability (SAT) solvers is usually explained by the existence of a certain “hidden structure” in real-world instances. We introduce the notion of backdoor trees as an indicator for the presence of a hidden structure. Backdoor trees refine the notion of strong backdoor sets, taking into account the relationship between backdoor variables. We prese...
